Ethnographers describe the Musuo of Yunnan as having clan lodges headed by elder women, shaman-priestesses, and as a primary deity, the mountain goddess Ganmu. Women have sexual freedom and receive lovers from other longhouses in their private upstairs rooms. Their homeland is part of a region designated by Han Chinese writers as a "Country of Women," centuries ago.
